SHADES OF RED

shades of red is a piece inspired by my infatuation with the color red. more importantly, each shade of red gives a different feeling to me. this composition uses a method of composing music based off of synesthesia; “an anomalous blending of the senses in which the stimulation of one modality produces sensation in a different modality.” the sections of this piece are all inspired by a different shade of red, mimicking the music that i would hear as i look at each shade.

this piece was premiered by the Winthrop University Clarinet Choir, directed by Dr. Deborah Loomer, on March 27th, 2024 in Barnes Recital Hall at Winthrop University.

• 1 Eb clarinet

• 3 Bb clarinets

• 1 Bb bass clarinet

• 1 Bb contrabass clarinet
